SPACE FOR CHANGE : THE ART CABARET

Kentish Town, London, 26/11/11-04/12/11

Space for Change is an experimental project exploring the positivity and possibility of change, and the impact it can have on individuals, groups and communities. The main element of the exhibition features the work of twelve young artists, exploring how the individual can create personal opportunities for change within our current global society and the individual’s capacity to affect their surroundings. Laura Yuile playfully experiments with building sites in her native China, photographing softly lit glass bricks she builds at night when the developments cease, whilst James Irwin attempts to provide breathing room, creating spaces that disengage with a world that can be reached in real-time. As an art exhibition, it attempts to move away from art elitism and to provide a space for artists to have their ideas communicated and expanded upon, without sacrificing quality of presentation.

Inspired by the community that has sprung up at St. Paul’s cathedral, replete with library, university, free kitchen and an amazing diplomatic decision making process, the project explores how dialogue between art and creative pursuits can paint a much richer picture of a situation and provide exciting ideas. Featured alongside the work will be objects painted with blackboard paint and chalk, allowing visitors to comment, replicating the ability to leave comments online and alter the meaning and interpretation of the exhibition. A program of live events will run over both weekends including a free film evening ending with a feature presentation and Q+A session with DJ turned filmmaker Alex Reuben (27th November), and an ‘Art Cabaret’, combining speakers from the Occupy London movement, contemporary dance, live performance art and spoken word (3rd December). Space for Change will also hold creative writing and movement workshops in and around the gallery space over the run-all are welcome.

This November will see the launch of SOWA’s first solo UK exhibition – “Religious Milk”. SOWA’s latest works, originating from the foundations and myths of Catholic religion, will be on display from 24th November until 1st December at the 3 Blind Mice Bar in London.

The black & white works put the religious traditions in the spotlight, mixing and merging them with ideas from popular culture, political ideologies and the lives of artists long-gone. All of the artworks present intricate detailing of the pencil work, filling the paper with doves, clocks and musical notes, and on the other hand contrasting with stars of David, crosses and flowing the religious milk.

The artist herself – SOWA – is a young illustrator, now launching her creative career in the UK. She specialises in hand-drawn pencil and ink illustrations of a symbolic, surrealist and quirky nature, from creating creepy cartoon creatures and psychedelic Asian lovers to the expressive religious and cultural scenes.

Starting at the 3 Blind Mice Bar, the works will then embark upon a London journey across a number of venues, to reach wide creative audiences of London art enthusiasts.

Joanne Hynes

A-Line dresses, pop art motifs and fancy up-dos at Joanne Hynes had me feeling like I’d time warped back to the swinging 60s today. Girls came out onto the catwalk to flashing spotlights and they wouldn’t have looked out of place in ’66 hit film Blow Up – I was almost waiting for Twiggy to appear. Alas she didn’t but the vibrant leather panelling in aqua, burgundy, pillar-box red and metallic gold kept me happy, as well as the various luminous tights all the models wore beneath pencil skirts. Heavily bejewelled bib necklaces perfectly suited the simple cuts, as well as playfully bright patent clutch bags, even eye liner matched in bright orange and turqoise.

Meadham Kirchoff 

Meadham Kirchoff transported me to a mystical candy-coloured land with this collection, where the girls were fabulously dressed, tiny prima ballerinas pranced around and Spice Girls played continuously.

Blonde bobbed can-can girls appeared first – parading around the stage, whipping the crowd into a buzzing excitement, and puffing pastel powder around the spacious Old Eurostar venue at Waterloo. As their dancing continued, girl after girl appeared from behind a gold curtain, flirtily walking around the catwalk which was decorated heavily with rainbows of party balloons.

Bejewelled bra cups, teddy bear motifs, pop socks and hearts galore, the models looked like they’d let their trendy little sisters dress them up. Jumbles of styles and colours, all with heavy make-up and cutesy blonde wigs, they could have been life sized dolls. Baby blue, lemon, mint, cream, pastel pink, fur trims, frills, scalloped edges and glittery eyeshadow – Marie Antoinette met the Power Puff girls at this show, and I certainly loved every single minute (And Anna Wintour did too by the look of our picture!)

ANNA WINTOUR WAS SMILING AT US!!!

Inbar Spector

 Moving away from her last very gothic collections, this season Inbar Spector was much more delicite and girly – in a sort of Black Swan meets 80s disco kind of way.

Models floated down the catwalk at Vauxhall Fashion Scout’s Freemason’s Hall to orchestral music in metallic, tulle creations. And creations they certainly were – powder pink, gold and white concertina puffball skirts were like clouds, or marshmallows, engulfing the waif like girls. Some tulle tutu skirts peeked out from oversized gold jackets that wouldn’t have looked out of place on a Japanese emperor, while others were held up with barely-there sheer straps, proving that Spector hasn’t turned a complete 360 from her previous bondage strapped creations.

David Koma

Hula inspired skirts with black leather tassels, sequin panelling and aztec prints were the order of the day at David Koma. With slicked back hair, models wore knee length sleeveless dresses in either black or white, with hints of lemon, turquoise and warm blushing pink. With deep v necks at the front, and sometimes the back, sheer panels and bare legs, it was evening wear all the way, in a collection totally in-keeping with Koma’s clean, chic aesthetic.

At the end of a very long but extremely amazing day we were totally happy… as you can see (especially thanks to the free Topshop iced teas, boy those things were moorish!)

Free vodka and whisky were flowing and Rob and Charlotte from Channel 4′s hit series Dirty Sexy Things were there too (her sister designs the lingerie!)

Can you tell we were happy with our free Jude’s Ice Cream? It was chilly but we scoffed it down anyway!

So ever since we got an invitation to luxury brand Nichole De Carle’s Cocktails&Knickers party obviously we’ve been very, very, very, VERY excited!

As seen on Nicole Sherzinger and Cheryl Cole, and featured in the likes of Vogue, we can’t wait to get an exclusive sneek peak at their gorgeous S/S 2012 goodies – only one day to go!
