A new book by Li Hui

Today at Ballad of we’re featuring Li Hui’s beautiful self published photobook 14 April. We had a chance to ask a bit about the making of her second book and her inspiration.

Your title seems to reflects the minimal design of the book, what does 14 April mean for you

It's my first self-publish book, and I was born on the day 14 April. I always believe in one sentence "Sometimes a whole life is lived in a day."

How was the processs of publishing your second book on your own

Maybe someone had my first book "After the wind", it was published in 2010. My work changed after that, I found what I really love and what I want to do by myself. I want to become a storyteller with my photos. So I made this book, and all designed by myself

I've decided that I want to self-publish a book once a year to reflect on what I did the whole year. I'm sometimes kind of lazy to bring a camera around, or sometimes when I got a idea but I didn't have camera beside me then I forgot to make it happen. I just want to change that bad habit. And the most important, I often got mail from people who tell me they love my work that much, and want me keep doing what I want to do.

What inspires you the most these days

I am mostly inspired by my natural surroundings, such as the patterns of a flower, the shape of the trees after a strong wind, thick clouds in the sky before a storm, the rain hitting the ground, the sun and the way its rays shine on my hand and the palm of my hand becomes transparent, I am touched by these subtle things. And when I listen to music, my mind becomes very active, and scenes emerge before my inner eye that fit the music. You will see those ideas in this book.

Li’s book features 61 images (including unseen work) made from 2011 to 2015. The first edition of 200 can be purchased here
