Ballad Of

Adi Putra

by Tessa Bolsover on 17 August 2015

Adi Putra is a photographer/filmmaker based in Los Angeles. His work is vibrant, psychedelic, and nostalgic, creating a world of pink skies and endless motion where bodies curl up in radiant desert landscapes or wander through hallucinatory wildflower fields. The images are full of light leaks and chemical stains, nodding to the temperament and fragility of early photographic processes. Check out our interview below.

Why do you take photographs? I do it mainly because I love doing it. Being able to create makes me feel alive. Also, I see photography as a self exploration tool and its a really fun way to exercise your creative mind.

What’s your favorite method? spontaneous and experimental

Who/what are your biggest influences right now? Lately i have been deeply in love and inspired by the films of Kryzstof Kieslowski

Do you like to shoot spontaneously or do you plan it out beforehand? I usually don't plan. I am actually really bad at planning. I always prefer to do it spontaneously , that way you can let your mind go wilder and thats when the magic happens.

How does making videos influence your photography, and vise versa? they are two different things but definitely related. Photography helps me to find my own visual aesthetic that you could apply in setting up shots for your video. I think thats very important to give your video more character.

Your work tends to take on super-vibrant, nostalgic tones. How has art from other time periods shaped the way you think about your work? i listen to a lot of psych / shoegaze music, especially the ones from the late 80s / early 90s and i tend to listen to them when i edit my photos. So thats probably why they have that vibrant / nostalgic vibe.

Do you have a favorite photograph? Its too hard for me to ever pick one.

What are you working on right now? I am finishing a new music video and hopefully it will come out soon .
