Ballad Of

Megan Eagles

Today's Brand New Art We Heart is London based female erotic photographer Megan Eagles. Megan's intention is to present the power and beauty of female sexuality, intimately from a female gaze. Shooting mainly with friends rather than fashion models, her photographic collection is engaging, organic, sensual and celebrates the strength of feminity. The relationship of female friendship between photgrapher and subject adds an extra layer of intimacy which makes us fall more in love with her work. Megan's photography has been featured in various magazines and published in the Mammoth Book of Erotic photography 2014.

I caught up with Megan to learn more about her art, inspirations and future projects we can look forward to.

Hi Megan, tell us about your work: I am a London based film photographer specialising in nude and erotic photography. I tend to shoot friends instead of models, never photoshop my subjects and am in love with tan lines, body hair, aiming to shoot women with a sexuality identity from a female gaze. I feel that so much of erotic photography is shot by men and want to try and reclaim the female body as not just an sexual object for male consumption but as something powerful for women to explore and celebrate for themselves.

I believe it’s quite a negative avenue to pursue to say if a woman is being sexual then it must be for a male audience - by shooting my friends the atmosphere on a shoot is fun and playful, we’ve generally seen each other naked before as you do when you hang out a lot together, and that intimacy lends itself to creating a new space for erotica, not posing for the man behind the camera but having a laugh with your mate. They don’t get embarrassed or over do it up. I always want them to feel really comfortable and relaxed.

How did it all begin? I got into photography when me and my best friend travelled to LA and we ended up shooting her running through the desert naked at 5am and hiding from any cars that drove by.

Where do you find inspiration? I am constantly inspired by movies, amazing girls I spot on the street, tumblr etc. London is such a perfect place to live to constantly be surrounded by new and inspiring people. I also really love my book collection. Whenever I want some inspiration, they remind me that there are so many ideas, avenues to explore and so many beautiful photos in the world. My current favourite is Exposure by Mary Ellen Mark.

What are you future plans? For future projects I am moving into moving image, I have been filming some new work on super8 which is coming out soon and exploring how we are seen through the gaze of technology.
