Ballad Of

Good For Nothing Embroidery

by Megan Blackburn on 21 November 2015

Embroidery would perhaps not normally be considered Brand New Art, stitching in general is probably for the most part a skill which is lost on our generation. However it would be hard to deny that Marie Sophie Lockhart Parisian born, NYC based folk artist of Good For Nothing Embroidery, has indeed turned this retro medium back into a popular art form.

Another thing we would not generally consider is that Drake has a favourite embroiderer, but as it turns it he does and Marie is it. Good For Nothing Embroidery’s Instagram account saw a huge spike in followers one morning after Marie sewed the praying hands image, now synonymous with Drake since he began using the image on album artwork, merchandise and had it tattooed on his arm, onto some vintage Levi’s and tagged Drake in the image. Not only did he repost the image, he messaged Marie asking for a custom made jacket to wear on tour. This was in January, Good For Nothing’s account now hosts an impressive 47.6k followers.

Rainbows, hearts, peace signs, as well as pin-up girls, Sailor Jerry references, tattoo designs and the slogan ‘made with love’ can be seen cropping up a lot in Marie’s designs, giving her work a retro, 70s-hippy feel which is very on trend. This DIY aesthetic is the antithesis of mass-produced high street clothing, and has always been associated with underground or sub-culture, making it effortlessly and infinitely cool. The fact that the embroidery is mainly sewn onto denim jeans and it consistently imperfect makes it accessible and unique, available to anyone with the time and inclination.

Marie is working on orders for Browns department store and a collaboration with Stella McCartney, however her online store has only two items, an embroidered t-shirt in two colour-ways. With Marie in such high demand and all other designs custom order only, it seems only more natural that, as long as people can just pick up a needle and thread, the DIY, improvisational roots of the brand should live on in it’s fans.
