Ballad Of

Andrea Savall

by Megan Blackburn on 17 October 2015

Today's Brand New Art is an editorial entitled 'Dove Stuck in the Past', by Spanish photographer Andrea Savall. Inspired by a summer's day in '79, the editorial is shot in London cafe The Breakfast Club and modeled by Paloma Marcos. See the editorial and read more about Andrea's work below:

Can you describe your photography style to us in three words?

Well, I couldn't choose just three. It's a mix between: Nostalgic, feminine, rebel, alternative and personal.

What was your inspiration behind this shoot?

The past has been always an inspiration for me. So I would like my pictures to remember the sixties and seventies. I can find everything suitable for inspiration: the cinema, a trip, a good book, a thought in my mind or a person. Londres was the one in these pictures. London life and the feeling that everything can happen in a standard day there was the inspiration this time. Because the days in London never end as you actually planed in the morning!

‘Dove Stuck In The Past' is based on the model, my friend Paloma with whom I've been collaborating in the past. She lives in London and I just imagined Paloma living in London during the seventies. Most of the clothes and accessories were found in vintage markets across the city.

Talk us through how the shoot came together?

The pictures were supposed to be taken outdoors but at the beginning of shooting the rain showed up so hard that we couldn't even see each other in the street. So we found this little acting school in the heart of Shoreditch when trying to avoid the rain and we decided to ask them if we could take some pictures inside.

Our next stop was “The Breakfast Club” in Hoxton Sq. It was a funny London afternoon as we were making up everything because of the weather and then locations, but it was magic.

Why the title ‘Dove Stuck In The Past’?

As I mentioned before, the shooting is based on Paloma and the seventies. Dove means Paloma in Spanish so I thought it could be funny to combine them.

This summer you’ve been studying photography at CSM which is often regarded as one of the best arts universities in the world, how has the experience been for you?

To be honest I was in a period of my life with a lack of inspiration. The opportunity to study at CSM has changed me in a very different way. It was absolutely amazing to be in their classes. We were literally breathing and seeing art and beauty every day. It was so exciting. The thing that inspired me the most is that they take into account the analogue photography. In Spain it is quite difficult to find and people tend to think this way of photography is dead but here they feel it as absolutely important. Actually they consider it as it is, the main beginning of the photography. I enjoyed as a kid in the photographic darkroom. Also, all the different people that I met during the classes inspired me so much. I have so many memories about such a wonderful crew of people. I honestly hope to come back next year to study Fashion or Artistic Direction.

**What and where do you normally study?

I'm studying my last year of my degree which is Media Communication. I'm also studying technic photography in Valencia, Spain - where I live.**

What would be your dream as a photographer?

At the beginning, I wanted to be a graphic reporter as I was obsessed with Robert Capa, but my dream is to do my living as a fashion photographer and be able to work with all the freedom. To imagine a story, look for the locations, decoration, pick the models and use the camera to express that story… when I have the camera on my hands, it becomes a part of my body, the part that lets me tell the world what I really see.

What can we expect to see next from you?

I'm focusing on the analog photography now. So I'm thinking about a very personal shoot based on 'the little things' and histories of humans around me. I would like to work as much manually as I could. Using the darkroom for the analog pictures.

Apart form that, this year I'm working on one of my goals when finishing my degree. ?I want to have fashion as an inspiration but not as the main subject. I want to spend so much time and dedication on it. I don't know yet if it's going to be focused in the digital or analog world or even both. Meanwhile I will be creating and taking pictures of all the beauty that surrounds me every moment.
