Cecilia Riis

Cecilia Riis is a recent graduate from Bilder Nordic School of Photography in Oslo, Norway. Her project-based, conceptual photography is driven by ideas of identity, self reflection, and social psychology. Her work is raw and tactile, using alteration techniques like chlorine and fire to depict fragmented states of memory which are perplexing and deeply personal. The photographs mesmerize and unsettle simultaneously.
The photographs above are taken from three recent projects, 'Pattern', 'Overganger', and 'Komorebi', about which she writes: "Both Pattern and Overganger are somewhat self portraits, where I use my own experiences to lead the project. Pattern is about how experiences in early life altered my life. It's about habits, darkness, and how to step out of the darkness. Visually represented through patterns. Patterns can be beautiful but also blinding at the same time. Overganger is about dealing with changes in life. Komorebi is a project about my friend, Daniel, who committed suicide two years ago. I wanted to look closer at the correlation between men and mental health, with Daniel's story as a basis. The project is shot only on analog. After I developed them I covered the negatives in klorin and later set them on fire. Through this I wanted to make a confliction with the viewer, and with myself; beauty and a inner war collides."
