Jenny Robins is pretty much a genius!! Her Facebook Project of illustrating each and everyone of her Facebook Friends is one of the best projects we have heard in a long time. A huge amount of time and effort and not to mention dedication put in by Jenny has really paid off. And of course she started with the letter ‘A’ check out some here and more on her Facebook Page.

Jenny can we be your friend? hehe.

Ballad Of..’s Wide Awake Club: Episode Eleven, Aubrey Beardsley

Episode Eleven: Aubrey Beardsley

One of the most controversial and stunning artists of the Art Nouveau movement, illustrator Beardsley’s work was preoccupied with erotica & legend, and he was a significant figure in the movement. He produced images which were dark, perverse and grotesque - much of which was circulated privately amongst his group of friends, London’s infamous ‘sexual deviant’ crew, of which his mentor was Oscar Wilde ♥ Although he was published extensively, rumour has it that many of his images weren’t.

Aubrey Beardsley’s work was of the Aesthetic movement, the British counterpart to Decadence and Symbolism (both predominantly French) and he used black ink to create his highly recognisable Japanese Woodcuts - Inspired illustrations. We love the Nouveau movement at Ballad, Ballad Of Mary Maud was “the Nouveau issue” intricate and highly stylised we cannot get enough.

Beardsley died at 25…25! such an influential and extensive body of work to die so young. As with his entire set, controversy and scandal surrounded him during his life and after his death. The question of his sexuality, or lack thereof, and incestuous rumours still surround this fascinating figure…

Pocket Inspiration: Julie Loen

By on August 20, 2010

For the last Pocket Inspiration, Julie Loen, a freelance photographer from Oslo, Norway, talked to Ballad Of.

What inspires you to create your work?
I am often inspired by music, it might be a line in a song or just the mood that triggers an idea. But half the time inspiration seems to come from nowhere and anywhere. It might be something as subtle as a smell or a certain kind of light, or sometimes the idea seems to just pop right into my head, fully formed, without further ado.

What is the first process in the creation of your work?
I prefer working on location, so finding a good place to shoot is quite important to me. Often the location and the general theme of the shoot will inspire further ideas within the same setting. On big shoots I’ll usually go scouting location, make sketches and plan the whole thing ahead more or less in detail. But I guess the very first thing I do after deciding on a theme and mood is look through magazines and art books for further inspiration.

What’s your dream?
To work full time with photography without making too many compromises.

Blaubushka is back!!!

We welcome the lovely Blaubushka back with open arms, we will have to see what tales of wonderment she has in store for us.

‘Alone in the dark, with only four corners for company. Sweet silence serenades a sleeping damsel. Ever sleep, never lie, ever sleep, never cry. Time watches over you as the world spins round. Time watches over you as you ,never speak, never make a sound.’

Walthamstow Charity shopping

So I heard Walthamstow has tonnes of charity shops there. So of I headed on the bus…two hours later I arrive. Not too fantastic, I must admit, but I did come away with two things. The Marley & Me book (if anyone has seen the film you will know what I mean, such a tear jerker) and a Golden Girls Nightie for bed time. A few gems spotted but not purchased. Enjoy x

Wish we could have these at Ballad HQ

Oh god…here come the tears
